The new year at E.F. Lindop Elementary promises to be the best yet. We are excited about the educational opportunities for our students as they begin their first day of school on August 25, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. This will be a half-day, with school dismissed at 11:45 a.m. Students will receive breakfast and fruit, along with a light snack; however, lunch will not be served. Additionally, on August 25, 2010, students will partake in our traditional back-to-school parade, beginning promptly at 10:30 a.m. and ending at 11:45 a.m. Our entire staff will participate in the parade, and you are invited to join us and march with your child. Should you wish to attend, please contact the main office to have your name added to the list of parade participants.
As the new Lindop District Superintendent, I am committed to academic excellence for all students. Our staff is eagerly waiting to support your child’s growth. But your participation is key. I am looking forward to creating a meaningful partnership with each of you to ensure that our students are globally competitive and prepared for high school, college and beyond.
As we prepare for the next school year, we will continue to examine ways to improve our reading and math test scores. We know that our students are very talented, yet we still have work to do in closing the achievement gaps and improving our chances of making AYP this year.
Despite our many successes, we know that not all students are progressing at the same pace. To that end, we have worked with administrators, union representatives and teachers over the summer to provide our students with an improved middle school schedule.
This schedule allows additional physical education twice a week, flexible advisory periods and daily, double-block periods for language arts and math. The middle school schedule will also move to trimester grading, while K-6 grades will remain on a quarterly grading schedule. We hope this move will maximize middle school students’ learning opportunities while optimizing staff schedules.
Certainly, one of our greatest challenges this year will be finances. Due to the state downfall in school funding, we have made significant cutbacks. With payments being delayed, we must now make further adjustments. Yet at the same time, we remain firm in our academic mission. The future belongs to our students, and we will not let them down. Our school district has adopted a new K-8 reading program and will be providing high levels of professional development in reading and technology. As we approach the new year, our mantra is “Preparing for Greatness.” This will only happen with your input and support. Together, we can accomplish our goal by finding solutions to improve student learning, increase parent involvement, become financially solvent, and move from good to great. We will succeed in providing our students with an education second to none. Have the best school year yet!
Sincerely,
Dr. Valorie M. Moore, Superintendent
